How to start skateboarding?

August 29th, 2010

I’m a beginner who’s about to start skateboarding. I just need some really basic knowledge about skateboarding. I just need all the information I can get but I also have couple of questions:

1. In terms of skateboard, can I just go to West49 and get a complete deck?
2. What brands in skateboarding should I consider when buying? And what are their differences?
3. How long does it take to get used to riding it (without tricks)?
4. Is it possible to skateboard during winter?
5. Do you really need a skater shoes?
6. Just any other general information that a beginner should know about.

Thanks in advance!

    1. You can pretty much go anywhere and get a pro complete for 100$
    2. Enjoi, Dark star, Plan B, Element. There are many, and it’s mainly how you like to ride. Mostly its just appearance. I have an Enjoi and i love it.
    3. It doesn’t take long. If your consistent maybe a couple of days, maybe a week.
    4. Yes, if you clear off the ground. Or skate indoors. If you don’t get any snow then yes. You’ll just have to skate in the cold.
    5. No, but it can be easier. My friend skates with tennis shoes.
    6. Go on youtube and watch some skating videos. I recommend Rodney Mullen. He’s the king of skating. he invented the kickflip. And Chris Cole, Nyjah Huston and many more.

Good Luck with skating, If you have any other questions email me aml8@comcast.net

on number one, sure. number two, if west49 sells its own skate shop boards then buy one. If not get a zero, mystery, or ATM. They make really well boards. number three, I went for about a year before learning tricks. I just practiced riding around and manualing and stuff. I then "leveled up" and learned the ollie, pop shuvit and beginner tricks like that. number 4, I usually skate in the winter, but I there is an indoor skate park where I live. for number 5, its not really a requirement to skate, but it gives you more grip and feels better when you ride the board with it. and number 6, don’t give up when people call you a poser and what not. Because maybe someday you will be better than them.

    1. i don’t know what that place is but if they sell decks, and other sorts then i guess

    2. you should really go for Element skateboards, they really specialize in decks for certain people weather you need nearly unsnapable decks, or very light decks or something in between

    3. depends how long you ride it, really its just about getting a feel for the board, if you skate all the time you’ll get a feel for it and its really fun :)

    4. really you can skate any season, just have to be suited for it(i wouldn’t plan skating with shorts and a t shirt on during the winter lol)

    5. you can pretty much use any shoes to skate with, i sometime skate with regular polo sneakers, but mainly i use DC’s, Etnies, and DVS’s

    6. you should get http://shop.ccs.com/product/model:124795/sku:61-34986/?cm=&supercat=Skate those will help you build confidence riding a skateboard of course your sitting still but its mainly for perfecting and getting higher ollies and other tricks, other than that its all you :)

if you dont have to dont buy completes… buy your own setup and put it together..(some skate shops will assemble it for you so thats a plus)

—–for decks you cant go wrong with
    Element
    plan B
    toy machine
    enjoi
    chocolate
    —–for trucks go with
    ventura, or independent
    —–for cheaper trucks
grind kings (dont get speed demons)
    ——for bearings
bone reds unless you want to spend a tone on bone swiss
    ——wheels
    get spitfire

it takes different people different lengths of time to get used to riding… and yeah you can skate during winter… just find a spot that isnt iced over… (thats easy in florida…lol).. do you need skater shoes no..but they do help with grip alot and are comfortable too… just go to walmart and get some airspeeds for $20 their cheep and are actually pretty good skate shoes….

1 Sure. Not sure on the quality of the components, but it should be fine for a start.
2 Everyone is going to have an opinion on brands. For the most part, all of the major brands are good.
3 Everyone learns at a different rate. The younger you are, the faster you will learn. If you snowboard, surf or wakeboard; you can pick up skateboarding quicker as the skill sets are similar.
4 It’s quite possible to skate in winter. If the pavement is clear of snow, ice and water, have at it. If you don’t mind the cold that is. Also, check for indoor skateparks in your area. West 49 has a skatepark locator on their website.
5 It’s not necessary to have skate shoes. Skate shoes have flat soles to get maximum grip on the board. I prefer old school basketball hi tops for skateboarding.
6 Be patient, skateboarding takes a lifetime to master. Enjoy it for as long as possible.
